Fractional Skin Resurfacing Laser

The latest revolutionary technology in skin rejuvenation, the Fractional Skin Resurfacing Laser, treats wrinkles, stretch marks, scars, and skin imperfections such as acne scarring, uneven skin tone, and brown spots due to sun damage. This is the next generation technology to the original Fraxel laser. The non-invasive fractional resurfacing laser produces tiny microthermal treatment zones, penetrating deep into the dermis and leaving the surrounding skin unaffected and intact. This “fractional” treatment allows the skin to heal much faster using the body's natural healing process to create new, healthy, tighter tissue. Clinical studies suggest a treatment regimen of 5 sessions, spaced about 2 to 4 weeks apart, for optimum results.

How does Fractional Resurfacing work?

The Fractional laser treatment produces thousands of tiny microthermal zones in the skin which then allows generation of new collagen cells. The result creates a more youthful and vibrant appearance to the skin, minimizing skin imperfections.

What skin conditions can Fractional Resurfacing treat?

Fractional Skin Resurfacing Laser treatment is designed to treat fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, and pigmented lesions (i.e. melasma) on the face and body. Unlike other resurfacing laser treatments, the fractional laser can treat all areas of the body including your chest, arms, legs, and abdomen.

How is Fractional Laser Resurfacing different than other lasers?

Until Fractional Laser Resurfacing, there were only 2 types of laser treatments, ablative and non-ablative. Ablative laser treatments, which uses vapor at a very high temperature, is very effective but has significant side effects and requires a very lengthy healing time. The non-ablative laser treatment has little or no side effects and almost no healing time, but requires numerous treatments over many months and provides limited results. The Fractional Laser treatment offers the effectiveness of ablative treatments with the benefits of gentler, non-ablative lasers.

How many treatments will it take to see improvements?

Clinical studies suggest on average, 5 treatments at intervals of every 2-4 weeks are needed for most patients. However, depending on one's condition, more treatments may be necessary. Your practitioner will be able to personalize the treatments for you. Results are immediate and progressive. Optimal improvement is usually visible in about 2 to 3 months. This time allows for complete healing and replacement of damaged tissue with new collagen and healthy skin cell growth.

Preparing for the Fractional Laser Resurfacing Treatment

The Fractional Skin Resurfacing Laser treatment is performed right in our office, and depending on the area(s) treated, will take approximately 20 minutes to 1 hour. The area(s) to be treated is thoroughly cleansed. If desired, topical anesthetic creams can be applied for pain management, but is not necessary. Unlike other treatments, no messy blue dyes are used.

What can I expect to see immediately following my treatment?

You will experience swelling and a mild sunburn sensation for about 1-2 hours following the treatment. For the first 2-3 days following the treatment the skin will be remain slightly swollen and red. Your skin may appear slightly redder or darker for 3 to 14 days depending on your skin type and treatment level. Your skin will naturally exfoliate as new skin replaces dead tissue. Therefore, mild flaking and peeling may occur for approximately 4-7 days. Use of a moisturizer will mask the appearance of flaking. Be sure to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30-plus at least twice daily to protect your skin from sun exposure during both the healing process and for several months after treatment.

You may apply mineral based makeup 2 days after treatment. Some patients are able to return to routine activities, including work and social obligations the same day of treatment. Others require a little more time, depending upon their skin condition and the level of treatment. Please consult with our practitioners to understand how Fractional Laser Resurfacing treatment will fit into your schedule. They are able to tailor your treatments to have either less or more downtime, depending on your schedule.
